Canadian Vegan Protein Powder – Exploring The Best Options For Your Plant-Based Diet

Vegan diets are on the rise for their health benefits (like heart health!), but also for the animals and the environment.

As a Canadian Registered Dietitian, the biggest problem I find with my clients who go vegan, is they don’t consume enough protein. That’s why I’ve written posts on low sodium protein powder and heart healthy protein bars to ensure enough protein is consumed.

Protein is important to keep our muscles happy – and yes, our heart is a muscle too! But it is also important for weight management and satiety.

What To Look For In A Canadian Vegan Protein Powder

I work with many clients who are interested in a vegan lifestyle because they are working on lowering their animal meat and saturated fat intake to manage cholesterol. Here is a list of low cholesterol protein sources I often recommend to these clients. 

However, sometimes getting your protein from a whole food source isn’t enough, or is perhaps too expensive, or just not practical or possible at that present moment in time.

In situations such as these, a protein powder supplement comes in very handy. So, if you are still struggling to eat enough protein, try incorporating vegan protein powders.

If you didn’t know this already, I’m Canadian. So, I thought I’d provide a list of Canadian vegan protein powders that I recommend. Yes, Canada is more than maple syrup, poutine, and igloos. We have vegan protein powders too!

There are a lot of options for Canadian Vegan Protein Powders, so I’ve come up with criteria to highlight some must haves to consider when choosing your favorite Canadian vegan protein powder.

Protein Content

First things first, let’s talk numbers. You want a powder that packs a protein punch, right? I often recommend looking for something that offers a good amount of protein per serving (aim for around 15-25 grams).

This is important because some vegan protein powders aren’t actually that high in protein, and thus you need multiple servings to reach this amount.

Clean Ingredients

Look for powders with clean ingredients and nothing you can’t pronounce. The shorter the ingredient list, the better. Also, keep an eye out for natural sweeteners instead of artificial ones.

Often unnecessary additives, fillers, or artificial sweeteners increase stomach upset like gas and bloating. Thus, avoiding these makes incorporating protein powder consumption a pleasant experience.

Taste and Solubility

Ever had a chalky or gritty protein shake? Not fun. Taste and texture are huge when it comes to enjoying your protein powder. Look for one that blends smoothly and has flavors that you actually like. Because if you don’t enjoy it, you’re not going to stick with it.


With the high prices of groceries these days, I’ve also considered the cost per serving and overall value for money.

Okay, so we’ve talked about why vegan protein powders are something you may want to start incorporating into your heart health diet. But, not all vegan proteins are created equal. Each type has its own pros and cons, a unique taste, and ways it loves to be used.

Let’s meet some of the most popular ones, shall we?

Pea Protein

First up, meet pea protein. Pea protein is actually derived from yellow split peas (not green peas). It’s got a great balance of amino acids, including those BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) that are needed for muscle repair and heart health.

It’s also super allergy-friendly.

And, a lot of the starch and fiber has been removed, which makes it much easier for the body to digest and absorb the protein, which is why it is a medium to fast absorbing protein.

Soy Protein

Soy protein is like the veteran in the plant protein world. How To Use Vegan Protein Powders

Maybe you’ve chosen a Canadian vegan protein powder to try but not sure how to incorporate it. Well I have a few easy ways to start using it!

Shakes And Smoothies

Of course this is a no brainer. But adding it to your smoothie is the easiest way to start using Canadian vegan protein powder!
